But who is the "Lord of the Flies"? The Lord of the Flies, says Ralph (73 y.o.), "is Simon's friend and enemy. While wandering around the Island, I found a drawing made by him in the sand. The Lord of the Flies was this big, ugly, scary and evil monster. I never told the others about it, though. I knew it could represent a risk if the kids came to know about his presence; certainly there would have been chaos everywhere if they knew about a SECOND monster on the Island!"
We believe this project may help the others to better understand the effects of isolation on a society. Through different items and witnesses, you will discover the hidden side of the story that in the late 40's shocked the entire world.
In any case, if you're interested to know in detail what happened during those 6 weeks on the Island, William Golding's book "The Lord of the Flies", a novel adaptation of the group's adventures, will answer all your questions.
It was about 10 in the morning, when a group of marines and their Naval Officer saw, in the distance, an island, with smoke all around it, and a bright reddish color, probably fire. He decided to change their route to see what was going on, but he would have never guessed that on that island, a group of kids, stranded there for about two months after an airplane crash, were trying to kill one of their mates. This is the story of a group of young survivors, that, during the end of World War II, were able to live on an island by themselves, and to create a new society from scratch.
These kids, who are still alive today, gave us, the CPA, many of their "souvenirs" that they brought from the Island. We were able to reconstruct their story, and create this "Lord of the Flies" project so that anyone can learn about their story as well.
